Know the windows.
Plan the work before them.
These dates do different jobs. A typical window helps you plan; only the applicable official call sets your deadline.
12–18 months before entry
Research course requirements and, for a doctorate, suitable supervisors and projects.
Coursework applications
Check the precise semester, trimester or course intake and its international deadline.
Research scholarship rounds
RTP and university competitions use institutional dates that may precede the research admission deadline.
Australia Awards cycle
Follow the participating-country page for opening dates, priorities and the submission route. Do not use another country’s deadline.
After accepting an offer
Complete required provider steps, obtain the CoE and prepare the applicable student-visa evidence.

More than one way
to fund your studies.
Research Training Program
University-administered research support can include a fee offset, stipend or allowances. These components are not automatically all included in every offer.
Your next action: Apply through the university’s higher-degree-by-research and scholarship instructions; confirm international-applicant eligibility.
Check the official source ↗Australia Awards Scholarships
Government-funded study for eligible participating-country applicants, with development priorities and award obligations.
Your next action: Read the country profile, priority sectors, required experience and return-home conditions before applying.
Check the official source ↗University research scholarships
Universities offer competitive research awards, sometimes alongside RTP-funded places or project funding.
Your next action: Check supervisor requirements, institutional ranking criteria, the specific closing round and what the award pays.
Check the official source ↗Coursework merit and regional awards
Undergraduate and taught postgraduate support often reduces tuition rather than financing the entire stay.
Your next action: Use the university’s international scholarship page and read course exclusions, offer conditions and continuation requirements.

The budget.
The documents. The details.
Compare all funding components
Record tuition, stipend, allowances, insurance and the number of funded years separately. Confirm any international fee gap.
Budget for your city
Build a budget for housing, utilities, food, transport and initial deposits rather than treating a national average as your personal cost.
Pre-arrival payments
Check deposits, Overseas Student Health Cover where required, immigration charges and travel. Use the current Home Affairs checklist for financial evidence.
Your starting document checklist
Use this to organise the file; the provider’s current requirements determine the final list.
- Passport and academic qualifications with full transcripts and grading information.
- Accepted language evidence and any subject, portfolio or professional prerequisites.
- A course-specific statement and academic CV.
- For research: proposal or project expression of interest, references and supervisor communication as required.
- Scholarship application and any country-specific Australia Awards evidence.
- Offer, acceptance and Confirmation of Enrolment at the appropriate stage.
- Insurance, financial evidence and genuine-student information requested by the official visa checklist.

One clear step
at a time.
Use the checklist to keep your own place. These are preparation milestones, not a substitute for official approval.
Decide whether your goal is coursework or research
Start with the qualification, subject and type of training you need. A taught master’s with a short project is not automatically a higher degree by research. Read the university’s description and entry requirements before choosing a funding route.
For each shortlisted course, compare content, duration, location, delivery mode and the professional or academic outcome. For research, identify a project or supervisor whose work fits a question you can investigate. Write a short explanation of why your previous study and experience prepare you for that route.

Check academic and language eligibility
Read the programme’s international qualification guidance and subject prerequisites. Confirm whether a research component, honours qualification or other evidence is required for your proposed research degree. Do not treat an informal grade conversion as the university’s assessment.
Check which English tests and alternatives the institution accepts and whether additional visa evidence may be necessary. Ask about ambiguous requirements using your actual qualification and intended programme. Record the written answer and any conditions that must be met before an unconditional offer or enrolment can be issued.

Build a supervisor or project shortlist for research
Read the project advertisement or research group’s work and identify a specific match in subject and methods. Contact potential supervisors where the university’s process invites this. Explain your preparation, the research interest and what you are asking them to consider.
Keep an outreach tracker with the date, fit and response; avoid sending identical messages to hundreds of academics. A supervisor’s interest does not guarantee admission or a scholarship. Confirm whether they can support the application and what the graduate school still needs to assess.

Choose the right scholarship route and round
Separate Australia Awards, university research competitions and coursework discounts in your tracker. For RTP, use the university’s process and record which funding components you are competing for. For Australia Awards, read the applicant’s participating-country rules before preparing development-focused responses.
Check whether scholarship consideration is automatic, requested within admission or handled by another form. Record the scholarship deadline rather than assuming the course deadline is sufficient. Keep the duration and renewal conditions visible so a partial award is not mistaken for a complete financial plan.

Prepare a complete and authentic application
Create a document list for each programme and funding route. Tailor your statement and research proposal to the actual selection criteria. Explain gaps or changes of direction accurately and keep dates, grades and experience consistent across your files.
Ask referees early and provide the relevant project or scholarship information. Check whether references must be uploaded by the referee, whether certified translations are needed and how the university accepts academic documents. Keep original records, readable PDFs and a final copy of every submitted response.

Submit and monitor separate decisions
Use the official university or government application system. Confirm any required admission fee, research endorsement or scholarship form is complete. Save the application reference and check the portal after submission for outstanding items.
Maintain separate status fields for admission, scholarship, conditions and acceptance. A place can be offered before funding is decided, and a competitive research nomination is not a final award. Ask the institution to clarify deadlines that overlap before paying a deposit you cannot afford to lose.

Reconcile the offer, funding and CoE
Read the offer and scholarship conditions together. Confirm the course, start date, tuition balance, scholarship duration and any exclusions. Check the provider’s acceptance, deposit and insurance requirements and the conditions for a Confirmation of Enrolment.
Create a cash-flow plan that covers the first weeks before a stipend or refund may arrive. Compare the institution’s refund or deferral rules with your remaining uncertainties. Keep the final CoE and award documentation together, and check that the details match the course you intend to undertake.

Prepare the student-visa application from official guidance
Use the Home Affairs document checklist for your circumstances and the current Student visa instructions. The process includes current enrolment evidence and the Genuine Student requirement; answer questions truthfully and consistently with your study history and plans.
Provide financial, language, insurance or other evidence where the checklist requires it. Do not confuse a university’s language waiver with an automatic immigration exemption. For a complex case, use Home Affairs or an appropriately authorised immigration professional. Do not make a non-refundable travel commitment based only on an admission offer.

Arrive with a practical first-semester plan
Confirm accommodation, arrival instructions, orientation and enrolment with the institution. Keep travel-accessible copies of important documents and check any conditions attached to your visa and award. Read the university’s student-support and emergency information before arrival.
For research, agree your induction, supervision and early milestones with the school. Record award reporting and continuation dates, and keep your contact details up to date. Seek advice promptly when your study plans or finances change rather than waiting until an administrative condition is missed.

Questions worth asking.
Do I apply to the government directly for RTP?
Students follow the participating university’s admission and scholarship process. The university administers the support.
Is a coursework scholarship a full living stipend?
Not necessarily. Many awards reduce tuition. Check fee, stipend, insurance and allowance components independently.
Does a supervisor’s agreement guarantee funding?
No. Formal admission and scholarship decisions remain with the relevant university or funder.
