Know the windows.
Plan the work before them.
These dates do different jobs. A typical window helps you plan; only the applicable official call sets your deadline.
Autumn preparation
Compare programme content, prerequisites, language and the accepted academic or entrance-test evidence.
January joint application
A common main window for September-starting English-taught degrees; confirm the exact current dates in Studyinfo.
Separate application periods
Some programmes use their own application windows and selection methods.
Scholarship request
The scholarship application is often connected to degree admission, but the receiving institution’s instructions control.
After accepting a place
Arrange confirmed tuition and living finances, insurance and the appropriate Migri process before travel.

More than one way
to fund your studies.
University tuition scholarships
Institutions offer their own fee waivers or scholarships for eligible fee-paying degree students; coverage and selection differ.
Your next action: Check the exact course and scholarship conditions, including whether a request must be made during admission.
Check the official source ↗Aalto University Excellence Scholarship
Competitive institutional tuition support under Aalto’s current regulations.
Your next action: Read eligibility, programme participation and scholarship continuation conditions alongside the degree application.
Check the official source ↗Progression-based waivers and institutional awards
Some support depends on academic progress or later study-year conditions rather than being a guaranteed first-year award.
Your next action: Calculate the first-year cost using confirmed support and read the conditions for any later waiver.
Check the official source ↗Doctoral funding and research employment
Doctoral study and the funding that pays living expenses are separate questions; paid positions and grants require their own decisions.
Your next action: Look for relevant university vacancies, doctoral-school funding and project calls, not only admission eligibility.

The budget.
The documents. The details.
Tuition category
Check whether fees apply to your citizenship and programme. Non-EU / EEA applicants commonly pay tuition for English-taught bachelor’s and master’s programmes.
Living costs
Plan living expenses separately from tuition support. The national guidance’s practical cost estimates and immigration evidence requirements serve different purposes.
Research finance
A doctoral programme without tuition does not itself supply a salary or living stipend. Obtain a separate written funding plan.
Your starting document checklist
Use this to organise the file; the provider’s current requirements determine the final list.
- Passport and evidence relevant to nationality or fee status.
- Academic certificates, transcripts and requested subject information.
- Accepted language evidence and any entrance-exam or selection-test results.
- Programme-specific statement, portfolio, CV or references where requested.
- Scholarship request and the evidence required by the university.
- Formal admission, tuition or scholarship documentation and insurance.
- Financial and other documents required by Migri for the actual residence route.

One clear step
at a time.
Use the checklist to keep your own place. These are preparation milestones, not a substitute for official approval.
Find the right degree in the official system
Compare courses in Studyinfo and the receiving university’s own pages. Record the programme level, teaching language, start date and selection method. Distinguish a university programme from a university of applied sciences route where the entry expectations differ.
Read the curriculum and prerequisite requirements before focusing on a scholarship. For doctoral study, identify the relevant doctoral programme and research group, then investigate funding separately. Keep a shortlist with clear academic reasons for each choice and a realistic alternative financing plan.

Identify joint or separate application periods
Read the programme’s application instructions and determine whether it participates in a joint application or uses a separate window. Do not assume a January calendar applies to every institution or degree. Check the current Studyinfo entry for the exact opening and closing times.
Record how choices, entrance tests, documents and results are handled for that route. Build personal deadlines for preparing evidence well before the formal cut-off. Keep scholarship submission requirements in the same tracker but separate from the admission deadline where necessary.

Check academic and language evidence carefully
Compare your qualification and subject background with the programme’s published requirements. Check the accepted language evidence, required validity and any permitted alternative. An exemption used for one institution should not be assumed valid at another.
Record any selection examination, portfolio, interview or subject prerequisite. Ask admissions a focused question where your qualification is not clearly covered. Keep official grading information and transcripts rather than relying on an unofficial conversion to predict eligibility or selection.

Build an honest tuition and living-cost plan
Check the fee status and scholarship conditions for the exact programme. Identify whether a waiver is awarded at admission, depends on later academic progress or covers only a fraction of tuition. Finland does not offer one universal full government award for all international bachelor’s and master’s applicants.
Budget living expenses and arrival costs separately. A tuition-free doctoral place still needs research employment, a grant or another source of living support. Compare the award letter with your full plan and do not assume part-time work will fund an otherwise unaffordable course.

Prepare a tailored and verifiable application
Use authentic academic records and explain your interest through specific course content, projects or methods. Tailor the required statement or portfolio to the selection criteria and keep factual details consistent across applications.
Check country-specific document instructions, translations and file formats. Arrange references where required and make sure the receiving system can access them. For research, develop a feasible proposal and discuss supervision as instructed by the doctoral school. Keep originals and final submitted copies organised by programme and intake.

Submit admission and scholarship requests correctly
Follow the programme’s official application link and complete every required selection, attachment and scholarship field. Check whether requesting financial support is a separate step; it should not be assumed automatic because you are an international applicant.
Save the confirmation and inspect the status for missing evidence or tests. Monitor official messages and respond within the stated deadlines. Keep admission, scholarship, offer acceptance and tuition-payment statuses separate, especially when a funding decision arrives later than the academic offer.

Accept an affordable place with clear conditions
Read the offer’s acceptance deadline and any outstanding academic conditions. Compare the tuition invoice with the scholarship decision and understand what is required to retain support. A later progression-based waiver is not money already awarded for your first year.
Prepare the initial housing, travel, insurance and living-cost reserve. Ask the university about the timing of fee reductions and the consequences of deferral or withdrawal before paying. Keep financial evidence consistent with the confirmed offer rather than with a hoped-for scholarship outcome.

Prepare the residence-permit evidence
Use Migri’s official guidance for your nationality, length of study and programme. Confirm admission, insurance, tuition and financial-evidence requirements and the identity-verification step. Study-related permission and local university enrolment are distinct decisions.
Check the current instructions before arranging travel and use your own circumstances rather than another student’s checklist. A scholarship may form part of the financial evidence but does not waive every other requirement. Seek the authority’s guidance or authorised professional advice for a complex case.

Complete arrival and protect scholarship continuity
Confirm accommodation, orientation, enrolment and original-document inspection arrangements with the institution. Keep your offer, insurance, funding and immigration evidence accessible. Check the local registration steps that apply to you and schedule them early.
Record academic progress requirements for any continuing tuition support. For research, agree supervision, employment or grant administration and reporting dates with the host. Keep contact details updated and use student-support services when a practical issue could affect study progress or registration.

Questions worth asking.
Are Finnish government scholarships available to every international student?
There is no universal fully funded government scholarship for all international bachelor’s and master’s applicants. Check institution-specific awards.
Does a tuition waiver cover living costs?
Not unless the award explicitly includes them. Tuition and living finance must be planned separately.
Is a doctoral admission offer a paid job?
Not automatically. Confirm a separate employment contract, grant or studentship decision and its duration.
