Know the windows.
Plan the work before them.
These dates do different jobs. A typical window helps you plan; only the applicable official call sets your deadline.
12 months before entry
Compare subject prerequisites, language, tuition category and the full financial position.
International admission rounds
Check the institution’s deadline for your applicant category; do not rely on a general national date.
BI master’s and international bachelor’s scholarships
BI lists 1 March as the recurring deadline for these scholarship applicant groups. Verify the relevant programme and current call.
Doctoral recruitment
Research vacancies are advertised with project-specific application and start dates.
After a confirmed place

More than one way
to fund your studies.

Your next action: Check eligibility, programme participation, academic progression and the scholarship request within admission.
Check the official source ↗BI Master International Scholarship
Tuition support for eligible international master’s applicants; the written award determines supported years.
Your next action: Read the actual scholarship conditions and prepare the required application evidence.
Check the official source ↗BI A. Wilhelmsen Foundation Scholarship
An institution-linked route contributing to eligible international master’s study.
Your next action: Apply through BI with the required foundation-addressed scholarship material, not directly to the foundation.

A doctoral vacancy is a distinct research recruitment route with position-specific requirements and terms.

The budget.
The documents. The details.
Current tuition rules
Check your exact programme and exemption category. Do not budget from an old claim that every public university is free to all international students.
Living-cost evidence
Use UDI’s current financial-evidence requirements alongside a realistic city and housing budget. A tuition waiver alone is not a maintenance plan.
Scholarship duration
Compare the support period and academic progression conditions with the entire degree, including initial costs before payments start.
Your starting document checklist
Use this to organise the file; the provider’s current requirements determine the final list.
- Passport and nationality or exemption-category evidence where applicable.
- Complete school or degree qualifications, transcripts and grading information.
- General entrance and programme-specific subject evidence.
- Accepted language results or documented alternatives where permitted.
- CV, statement and scholarship letter or research application as requested.
- Formal admission, tuition-payment or award evidence and a complete living-cost plan.
- The current study or research immigration documents applicable to your circumstances.

One clear step
at a time.
Use the checklist to keep your own place. These are preparation milestones, not a substitute for official approval.
Choose a suitable degree or research vacancy
Compare programmes using the official national and university pages, then read the actual admission requirements. Record subject content, language, degree duration and the intended start. A university’s reputation is not a substitute for meeting its mandatory prerequisites.
For doctoral study, build a separate vacancy shortlist and read each project as a research recruitment opportunity. Compare the requested methods and experience with your evidence. Keep academic fit and financing visible together so you do not spend months preparing for a place you cannot afford to take up.

Check the present tuition and exemption rules
Ask the university which fee category applies to your nationality, residence status and programme. Current public-university rules should not be replaced with an older “free study in Norway” summary. Read the exact fee schedule and documentation needed for an exemption.
Keep tuition separate from semester charges and living expenses. Where a scholarship is available, check whether it changes the invoice or reimburses costs later. Record the deadline for any fee-status evidence and obtain written clarification when your circumstances are not clearly covered.

Resolve academic and language requirements
Read the general entrance rules and the course’s specific qualification, credit and language requirements. Confirm how documents from your education system should be submitted and which translations or grading explanations are needed.
For a research position, address the vacancy’s scientific and methodological requirements rather than relying only on a degree title. Ask the institution about unclear equivalence issues before submitting. Avoid interpreting an unofficial grade calculation or another university’s waiver as a binding decision for this programme.

Build a funding plan from real accessible awards
Check institutional scholarships, eligible joint programmes and research vacancies. The national portal does not provide a general government scholarship automatically available to individual international degree students. Each opportunity needs a named provider and an applicant-accessible process.
For BI awards, read the scholarship category, degree eligibility and application instructions. Keep tuition support distinct from any living contribution and note how long the award lasts. Do not approach a foundation directly when the programme specifies an institution-managed application.

Prepare course-specific or project-specific evidence
Build the statement, CV and requested scholarship letter around the actual course or position. Explain your preparation with verifiable academic or professional examples and keep dates and qualifications consistent. For research, connect your interests to the advertised question and methods.
Arrange references, translations and any requested course descriptions early. Follow the institution’s format and upload limits and do not add unnecessary sensitive documents. Keep final submitted copies and review them at ordinary reading size to catch incomplete or unreadable evidence.

Submit under the correct international deadline
Check the university’s deadline for your exact applicant category and degree. Add any scholarship, payment and document cut-offs to the same tracker. BI’s published scholarship calendar should not be treated as a national university admission deadline.
Submit through the official portal and save the receipt. Inspect completion status and monitor messages for missing material, interviews and decisions. Track admission and scholarship selection separately and read acceptance instructions carefully rather than assuming a place will remain open while funding is undecided.

Confirm affordability before accepting commitments
Compare the offer, tuition invoice and award letter. Record all supported costs, duration and academic progression conditions. Build a budget for housing, food, transport, insurance where relevant and the initial period before any scholarship payment arrives.
Use the official immigration maintenance requirement as an evidence rule, not as a guarantee that your actual living costs will be identical. Ask for written clarification of ambiguous scholarship terms and check refund or deferral conditions before paying. Keep a realistic alternative if the finances remain unresolved.

Use the right UDI route and evidence
Use UDI’s current guidance for your nationality and study or research arrangement. Confirm the required admission, tuition, maintenance and other documents and how to complete identity or appointment steps. A research employment route may not use the same conditions as a taught degree.
Check the current financial figures and accepted forms of proof rather than copying an old student’s checklist. Do not assume a university award replaces all immigration evidence or guarantees permission. Use the authority or an authorised professional for individual legal questions.

Arrive ready for enrolment and ongoing conditions
Confirm enrolment, accommodation, orientation and any original-document checks with the institution. Keep key academic, financial and immigration documents accessible during travel and schedule local formalities that apply to your circumstances.
Record scholarship progress and renewal requirements, or research contract and supervision arrangements where relevant. Keep your contact details current and use the university’s international support early when practical problems affect your studies. Check the conditions of your permission before changing study or work arrangements.

Questions worth asking.
Is Norway free for every international student?
No. Check the current institution, programme and applicant-category fee rules and any applicable exemption.
Is there a universal government scholarship for overseas degree students?
The national study information does not provide such an individual scholarship. Look for specific institutional, consortium or research routes.
Does every BI award include a living stipend?
No. Awards and applicant categories differ; use the actual scholarship terms to distinguish tuition support from living contributions.
