Know the windows.
Plan the work before them.
These dates do different jobs. A typical window helps you plan; only the applicable official call sets your deadline.
12 months before entry
Research course fit and Portuguese or English language requirements; prepare recognition and translations.
University admission phases
Several institutions use more than one phase. Read the specific 2027 call rather than assuming later rounds will remain available.
FCT doctoral call 2026
The general call ran 2–31 March 2026 and closed at 17:00 Lisbon time on the final day.
Foundation or project calls
Doctoral and laboratory funding may follow calendars separate from degree admission.

Your next action: Check the specific programme’s mobility, host and research-stage rules before contacting a supervisor.
Check the official source ↗University and research-unit opportunities
Institutional awards and research-funded positions vary; an advertised place may be a studentship, employment or a fee concession.
Your next action: Use the university or research unit’s actual competition notice, including duration and renewal conditions.

The budget.
The documents. The details.
Fee category
Ask which fee schedule applies to your nationality and status. A Portuguese or EU fee cannot automatically be used for every international entrant.
Award components
Read the stipend, fee support, insurance, duration and payment timetable separately. An award application is not evidence of secured funding.
Living and arrival costs
Compare housing in the specific city and allow for deposits, travel, translations and immigration charges before the first funding payment.
Your starting document checklist
Use this to organise the file; the provider’s current requirements determine the final list.
- Passport and applicant-status evidence requested by the university.
- School or degree certificates, transcripts and the institution’s explanation of grades.
- Proof of the entry subjects or examinations required for your qualification route.
- Programme-language certificate or written confirmation of an accepted alternative.
- CV, motivation statement and references for the chosen degree.
- For doctoral funding: research plan, supervisor and host information required by the call.
- Translations, recognition decisions and immigration evidence only in the form requested by the receiving authority.

One clear step
at a time.
Use the checklist to keep your own place. These are preparation milestones, not a substitute for official approval.
Identify your admission category
Begin with the exact degree level and your legal applicant category. International-student competitions, postgraduate applications and exchange agreements are not interchangeable. Open the course page and record where the official call is published.
Build a comparison table with teaching language, prerequisite subjects, duration, fees and the award you would receive. Check the curriculum rather than choosing only a low advertised tuition figure. For research, decide whether you are applying to a doctoral programme, a funded project or a separately financed studentship.

Check qualifications and language evidence
Read the receiving institution’s requirements for your exact country and qualification. Confirm how school subjects, entry examinations or prior university credits will be evaluated. Ask whether recognition is required for admission, enrolment or another purpose rather than commissioning unnecessary procedures.
Check the teaching language at module and thesis level. A programme may accept an English-language application while requiring Portuguese for parts of the course or placement. Store written clarification from the university alongside the requirements so you can resolve conflicting general advice.

Map every phase of the competition
Create a separate row for each university and faculty call. Record application opening, document cut-off, selection results, acceptance and enrolment dates. A later phase may have fewer places or a different applicant category; do not rely on it as a guaranteed extension.
Build your own document-completion date early enough for translations and corrections. Add research or foundation deadlines to the same tracker without treating them as university deadlines. Where the next cycle is unpublished, write “awaiting announcement” instead of presenting an inferred date as confirmed.

Develop a credible doctoral funding route
For doctoral study, connect a research question to suitable supervision and an eligible host before assembling the funding file. Read the FCT call and evaluation rules with your proposed supervisor; the scientific plan and the host arrangements need to fit together.
Separate a general studentship from a non-academic or foundation route. Confirm who supplies institutional approvals, how the project is assessed and which costs are supported. A supervisor’s encouraging reply is valuable, but it is not an award decision. Keep another financing scenario available until the formal outcome is issued.

Assemble a coherent evidence file
Maintain one master record for your legal name, qualifications, employment dates and publications. Tailor the motivation statement to what the course actually teaches. Provide evidence for claims rather than creating achievements to make the application sound stronger.
For research, organise the proposal around a feasible question, method, resources and timetable. Give referees the relevant course or call description. Check translation and certification instructions, file sizes and whether originals will be required later. Keep a copy of each submitted version and the associated official call.

Submit the university and funding applications separately
Follow the official portal linked from the university or funder. Complete every required section and ensure any official fee, reference or institutional endorsement is received in time. Do not assume the university will submit an external studentship application for you.
Save receipts and reference numbers, then check completion status. Monitor messages during the assessment period and respond to document requests promptly. Treat the results, acceptance and enrolment steps as separate milestones; being selected does not mean an unaccepted place will remain available indefinitely.

Read the full financial offer
Compare the admission offer and the award letter line by line. Identify tuition, stipend, fees not covered, payment dates and any continuation conditions. Ask the provider to clarify ambiguous terms before accepting a financial commitment.
Build an arrival budget using your actual city, housing arrangement and travel plans. A successful future scholarship application cannot be used as confirmed income today. Consider how you would handle delayed payments or a remaining fee balance, and check cancellation terms before paying a deposit.

Prepare the relevant visa and residence documents
Use official Portuguese guidance and the mission serving your place of legal residence. Confirm the category appropriate to your degree or research arrangement and assemble the required offer, funding, insurance and accommodation evidence.
Check whether translations, authentication or appointments are needed and how your documents must be presented. Avoid using someone else’s nationality-specific checklist as your own. Do not interpret university admission as immigration approval; seek authorised professional advice when the circumstances are complex.

Complete arrival and maintain your status
Ask your university for enrolment, original-document checking, orientation and student-support arrangements. Prepare a calendar for the local administrative steps applicable to your permission and accommodation, using official instructions.
Keep copies of the academic and funding decisions and record attendance or progress obligations. For a research studentship, discuss reporting and renewal dates with the host at the beginning rather than near expiry. Update contact details in the relevant systems so important notices do not go to an unused account.

Questions worth asking.
Is there one national deadline for all degrees?
No. The university, faculty and competition determine the dates; undergraduate, postgraduate and research routes can differ.
Does an FCT application secure a university place?
Treat admission, hosting and funding as separate requirements. Follow the current call and institution’s procedure for how they connect.
Should I wait for a later admission phase?
Only after checking the official call. Later phases may not offer your course, applicant category or enough time for other required processes.
